Platform Spotlight 🔎✨

FAST FACTS

# Years in Platform: 3
Size of Platform Team (including you): 1
# Years in VC prior to current Platform role: 5

1 // How do you define Platform?

Platform means a lot of different things depending on the firm, but I like to define it as (usually) a non-investment role. We get to work on a range of areas that, in my opinion, mirror startup life a bit more.

2 // What was your Path to Platform?

For my first job out of college, I was a political analyst for a foreign government. Then, I was an operator in startups, working mostly in operations, digital marketing, and community. From there, I joined All Raise, working first on community building for the investor side and then pivoting into building out the Series A curriculum for founders. I joined Backstage Capital as Head of Platform in my first true Platform role and now am at Better Ventures as the sole Platform hire.

3 // Favorite part of the Platform role?

The constant context changing and variety of hats I get to wear. I learn so much, get to work with amazing founders, and have a very dynamic job.

4 // What part of the Platform role surprised you?

A lot of firms bring on Platform people to be "value-add" to their portfolio. However, if you don't focus, you'll find yourself stretched too thin and doing many things not very well, instead of a few things very well. Focus and saying no are key!

5 // Break down your Platform role by function.

  • Portfolio Support & Community: 45%

  • Marketing: 45%

  • Investor Relations: 5%

  • Operations: 5%

6 // Pitch a founder on the value of your firm’s Platform in 280 characters or less.

Tactical, hands-on best practices from a former startup operator who gets it.

7 // What is your advice to Platform job seekers?

Network, learn everything and anything you can, and definitely take advantage of trial periods that many firms offer to see if it's a fit!

Reading 🗞️

“Investment in a platform function isn’t a checkbox. It should also be noted that not all platforms functions are created equally. The focus of the platform team must align with the investment strategy of the firm if it is to maximize value.”

Dale Chang, Scale Venture Partners via Crunchbase

“What are some of the similarities and differences between the Chief of Staff, Business Operations & VC Platform roles? Having worked in each of these roles…each role is dynamic and no day is the same. They also all involve generalist traits of beinga ble to zoom in and out of handling multiple projects and bringing order to chaos.”

Leo Lu, Director of Platform @ Struck Capital via Blog Post
