1 // How do you define Platform?
Platform is alllllll of your firm’s activities, efforts, and programs designed to accelerate the growth of their portfolio companies.
2 // What was your Path to Platform?
Executive Director at Launch Indy; Marketing Specialist at Envisage Technologies; Director of Bloomington Technology Partnership
3 // Favorite part of the Platform role?
I love getting to see actual positive outcomes within our portfolio companies as a result of the work we're doing.
4 // What part of the Platform role surprised you?
Every fund and every Platform role is so different! It's been great to meet dozens of other professionals in the space, but there's not one uniform way to simply "do Platform."
5 // Break down your Platform role by function.
HR/People: 40%
Operations & Events: 20%
Marketing: 15%
Investor Relations: 10%
Community: 10%
Portfolio Support: 5%
6 // Pitch a founder on the value of your firm’s Platform in 280 characters or less.
M25 provides unparalleled portfolio support with a robust talent pipeline and helps our companies raise millions of dollars annually at our Club M25 Summit, the Midwest’s largest gathering of VCs from across the US.
7 // What is your advice to Platform job seekers?
Be proactive by reading books on VC, and taking free classes and webinars on the topic. Know that if you're specialized in a specific area of Platform, you're more likely to be a strong candidate at larger firms with specialized roles vs. a smaller firm looking for a generalist. Research each firm's existing Platform activities and customize your "how I will slay at this job" for each of them.
Reading & Learning 🗞️
As I cross over my first anniversary at focal, I can't help but think back to my first days - wide-eyed, raring to go, and armed with an insatiable curiosity that bordered on nosiness. I was the new kid on the block who talked to everyone and their dog about how to do this job.
"What have you learned?", "What do you wish you'd known?", "What's the meaning of life" I asked, as if collecting wisdom like I used to collect participation trophies. Ah, the enthusiasm 🥹
Over the past year, I've had the privilege of learning from some of the brightest minds. Their advice has been invaluable, guiding me through challenges and opportunities alike. I thought it would be helpful, for those just starting, to fast-track a bit by sharing some of the wisdom that has shaped my journey thus far:
🕒 Suzanne Gauron, Head of PE Client Solutions & Product Strategy, Goldman Sachs
"Time is Finite, Lean on Experts"
Suzanne couldn't have been more right. In a fast-paced environment, leaning on our fund admin, legal advisors, and tax teams has been a game-changer. It's freed me to focus on what I can uniquely bring to the table.
👀 Natalie Ledbetter, Fractional/Interim People Ops Exec
"People Watching Pays Off"
Natalie suggested observing what other VCs are doing that is working/not working and evolving your offering and approach from there. Natalie spent time working inside startups and found that it became clear what was most successful was partnering with founders as an operator and builder.
👂 Meghan Fahy, Community Manager, Greycroft
"Go on a Listening Tour"
Meghan suggested a listening tour with portfolio companies. This has been instrumental in understanding their needs and how we can best support them.
🛠️ Chrissy Cope, Talent Lead, Early Stage - Europe, Sequoia Capital
"Think Product"
Chrissy got me thinking about internal product building. It's led to some exciting initiatives I'm looking forward to sharing more about soon!
📈 Amber Quiñones, Head of Platform, BBG Ventures
"AGM and Beyond"
Amber's insights into AGM prep and its role in LP strategy and firm branding have been invaluable. It's helped us think holistically about our approach, and she was incredible in workshopping some of my thinking.
📚 Patrick Lahue, Head of Platform at Struck Capital
"Learn the Lingo"
Patrick emphasized the importance of meeting people and learning the terminology. He was so right. Everyone assumes you know what they are talking about, but the list of acronyms is endless…
⏳ Riley Finch, prev. Director of Ops & Platform, Afore Capital
"The Year-Long Learning Curve"
Riley gave me wise wisdom passed down to him when he started - warning me about the year-long learning curve, and boy, was he right. Every day presents a new challenge, but also a new opportunity to grow.
