Platform Spotlight 🔎✨
⚡ FAST FACTS
# Years in Platform: 5
Size of Platform Team (including you): 3
# Years in VC prior to current Platform role: 0
1 // How do you define Platform?
I think of Platform as pretty much everything that helps make the fund and your portfolio companies be successful that the investment team isn't involved with. Everything from ops and marketing to portfolio support and investor relations; there's so much variety.
2 // What was your Path to Platform?
I started my career working as an innovation consultant through a fellowship with The Commons and then worked with United Way of Greater Milwaukee helping fundraise for a few months before joining the AmFam Institute in a pseudo-Platform role as a community manager. It was in that role that I really learned about venture and eventually pivoted to focus on Platform full-time about a year in.
3 // Favorite part of the Platform role?
I really love the continuous learning that's required in this role. Whether I'm learning about a new technology from a founder or being tasked with a new project like developing an impact measurement framework, I am constantly asking questions and absorbing new information. Luckily, the Platform community has been incredible in helping answer those questions and being willing to share knowledge.
4 // What part of the Platform role surprised you?
I was surprised to find such a tight-knit community of Platform professionals existed across funds. My background isn't in venture so I didn't have many expectations to begin with, but there is no way that I could have imagined a group that is so generous and genuinely welcoming.
5 // Break down your Platform role by function.
30% Portfolio Support
30% Community
25% Operations
15% Marketing
6 // Pitch a founder on the value of your firm’s Platform in 280 characters or less.
At the AmFam Institute, we're all about authentically supporting mission-driven startups that close equity gaps in the U.S. We provide holistic wellness support, a strategic impact focus, and storytelling expertise with the belief that our community of founders is at the heart of the impact we're seeking to make.
7 // What is your advice to Platform job seekers?
I think understanding venture is a huge plus when it comes to breaking into Platform, so I'd suggest reading books like Venture Deals so that you're familiar with all the jargon in VC and you understand how it works. I also think that having experience in the startup world can be a huge help, especially if you're wanting to work with portfolio companies in your specific Platform role. Not only does it show that you understand a startup's needs, but it also can show that you have that operator/generalist skillset that requires you to work at a fast pace, learn new things, and adapt quickly.
