Platform Spotlight 🔎✨
⚡ FAST FACTS
# Years in Platform: 3
Size of Platform Team (including you): 4
# Years in VC prior to current Platform role: 4
1 // How do you define Platform?
All the non-funding support offered to portfolio companies post-investment.
2 // What was your Path to Platform?
All the roles I've held have been in community building. Prior to VC, I worked at non-profits with college students and teens, often building groups and communities. When I got my foot in the door of VC it was through an ops & community management role (between us, my first title was technically Office Manager). What helped me grow in the organization was building relationships with founders and key stakeholders, alongside my ops skillset which is basically being a "fixer" and jumping into any project that was handed to me. It has helped me establish myself at the firm, connect with many different departments, and ultimately grow into a strategic role. Currently, I am focusing on operationalizing our approach to, and support with, talent needs for our portcos.
3 // Favorite part of the Platform role?
Getting to touch many different parts of the business, opportunities to try on many different hats to see what fits best, working with a variety of startups and industries; basically never getting bored and constantly being challenged.
4 // What part of the Platform role surprised you?
What was most surprising to me in some ways is that there is never a "right" answer. There are many different ways to approach the same problem, and ultimately I realized I need to lean into my own strengths for creative problem-solving rather than mimicking what others are doing around me. It was most surprising to learn that everyone around me is just "figuring it out" and when they have "figured it out" it usually applies best to their firm. The real secret sauce to being great at this job is knowing how to figure things out quickly and creatively. Knowing that sooner would have helped me own my confidence in what and how I want to build and approach things.
5 // Break down your Platform role by function.
40% Community
20% Portfolio Support
20% Operations
20% People & Talent
6 // Pitch a founder on the value of your firm’s Platform in 280 characters or less.
Company Ventures has a strong presence in NYC offering access to an expansive network in the VC and startup ecosystems, along with experts in health tech, fintech, and SaaS industries.
7 // What is your advice to Platform job seekers?
I think the most competitive edge for an ops role is being multifaceted in what you're willing to do (no job is too big or too small), having thick skin (can't take things personally), and having a growth mindset (self-development and learning on your own time). Do your research: Get very familiar with the firm's team and vibe. If there isn't alignment there, it will be very difficult to do your job well. Try to connect with people who have worked at the firm to get insight into their experience and why they're no longer with the firm. Make an educated decision, don't just take the job for the paycheck, trust me.
