A conversation with my husband-

Me: I had an interview for a marketing role at a venture fund. I’m really interested, and I think it went well.
Him: Marketing? I thought you were interviewing for a platform role.
Me: Marketing is platform.
Him:

Platform can mean a lot of things depending on the fund you’re at- like the size of the fund, the stage of investments the fund makes, the type of fund, the goals of the GPs, which direction the sun happens to be shining at 12:03pm PST, and whether or not it’s tech week in [insert your major city here].

If you’re in platform, I imagine you’ve had this convo with a loved one, a friend, your doctor, or perhaps someone you have quite literally just met at your niece’s birthday party who asks what you do for a living. When I built out the platform function from 0 to 1 at my previous fund, there was so much sensory overload. It was difficult to find the right direction at first.

What helped me the most with formulating a strategy was starting with my peers. Venture as an industry is inherently intimidating, and the warm intro problem (primarily with founders needing access to funds) hasn’t gone away, but platform folks as a whole are warm, welcoming, and ready to share their thoughts with you…

…What I’m saying is, take the opportunity to learn from your peers. Send a DM to the person you have a professional crush on. Ask to chat. Literally, the worst thing that could happen is that they don’t reply. You will survive, I promise. Like recently, when I DMed Jack Altman with the subject line, “Can I be your first platform hire?”. I can assure you that is not a joke, and I did do that.

I’m still exploring what my next role looks like, and sometimes I feel super anxious. Sometimes I feel really confident. Sometimes I would like to really lean into having very little structure in my schedule for the first time ever and sleep until 10am (and tbh, sometimes I do). All that being said, my point is- don’t be afraid to be vulnerable, do something that feels brave, DM Jack Altman, ask for help from your network… every time you do (most) of those things, you’re growing a little.
