⚡ FAST FACTS

# Years in VC prior to current Platform role: 0

1 // How do you define VC Ops/Platform?
VC Ops professionals are critical to the success of any venture firm! While the day-to-day of an Ops (or Platform) role typically looks different at every firm, it's a job that at at the end of the day requires you to roll your sleeves up and think critically about a) how to keep the trains running on time and b) how everyone at the firm can work most effectively to improve outcomes for founders, LPs, and your colleagues internally! At Notation, "Ops" includes everything from tax, audit, and fund admin to portfolio ops, IR, and founder support!
2 // What was your Path to Platform?
Before joining the venture world, I was an operator for many years. Prior to joining Notation, I was the Chief of Staff (fmr. Director of Ops) for Able.co - a product acceleration studio based in Brooklyn. I led HR, Recruiting, Finance, and Ops teams for our US and Peru-based employees. I also worked at WeWork to help establish, grow, and scale finance operations around the world. My first job out of college was a total 180 - I worked for PwC on the Systems & Process Assurance team.
3 // Favorite part of the Platform role?
Every day is different! I've learned so much over the past few years about what it takes to run a venture firm top to bottom and inside and out. As a member of a very small team, I'm lucky to observe and have access to every facet of the business and love that no day is ever the same.
4 // What part of the Platform role surprised you?
As mentioned above, I'm one of three people at our firm - the smallest company I've ever worked for. I don't know if I totally appreciated how many different technical areas I'd be supporting before joining. The company I worked for previously was 100+ people, so we had "a team" for everything! Making the transition to such a small team, I realized just how hands-on you get to be in all functional areas. Find great partners to work with because you can't be an expert in everything! Also, there is a community for you regardless of your role. The superheroes of venture are not just the investors - find an amazing group of people who do what you do and get fired up about the same things you love. I've been so lucky to find amazing "coworkers" - even though we might not work at the same firm, there is so much shared insight and empathy to be found.
5 // Break down your Platform role by function.
40% Ops
30% Finance
20% Portfolio Support
10% Investor Relations
6 // What is your advice to Platform job seekers?
For anyone joining any firm, but especially those joining small teams - get to know your GPs! Dig into how and why the firm's investment thesis is what it is, who the GP is and how they think about investing and founder relationships, why they choose to do this job every day, etc. Working in venture is so different than a traditional company or VC-backed startup, so take your time getting to know and more deeply understand the people you'll be working with. Alignment, understanding, and compassion is critical!
7 // Content Reccos?
7 Powers by Hamilton Helmer and Venture Deals by Brad Feld.
Not the most exciting reads, but great primers for those wanting to learn more about the investment side of things! I often revisit them both.

On Friday, the House of Reps passed the Expanding Access to Capital Act, which “will facilitate capital formation by strengthening our public markets, helping small businesses and entrepreneurs, and creating new opportunities for all investors” (Source). Next, HR 2799 will head to the Senate for a vote, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
