Platform Spotlight 🔎✨
⚡ FAST FACTS
# Years in Platform: 2
Size of Platform Team (including you): 7
# Years in VC prior to current Platform role: 0
📍 Toronto, Canada
1 // How do you define VC Ops/Platform?
I would break out VC Platform into 3 key areas:
Raising the awareness and brand of the fund
Meaningfully moving the dial for companies in the portfolio
Helping companies fundraise upstream
The way we think about Platform at Forum is focused on how we can bring the most value to our founders and to the fund.
2 // What was your Path to Platform?
Before working in VC Platform I was an early-stage operator in Growth, Sales, and Operations at a couple of different start-up companies in the Ed-Tech Space. I actually came into VC by chance. I had been working in the start-up ecosystem for 8 years and helping founders with a lot of their early company set up. Through that, I had made a lot of founder friends - when the opportunity came up at Forum it was through founders in my network that I got connected to the team.
3 // Favorite part of the Platform role?
Working with founders. Without a doubt, the best part of my job is helping make their lives easier. The beautiful thing about investing as early as we do is that you can have a massive impact in the trajectory of these companies. I love working with our founders on GTM and figuring out how to sell, who to sell to, how to have those conversations. It's super fun.
4 // What part of the Platform role surprised you?
I'm surprised about how much this role requires an operations background! This might be because of our fund and the size of our portfolio of over 350 active companies but you need an incredible amount of operations experience to make sure you can provide scalable support and resources. I spend a lot more time than I would have initially thought building and testing systems to improve our founder experience.
5 // Break down your Platform role by function.
50% Portfolio Support
30% Community
20% Operations
6 // Pitch a founder on the value of your firm’s Platform in 280 characters or less.
Forget about the generic start-up school you have seen from other accelerators. Our Platform team is set up to support you with hands-on GTM support that is B2B SaaS focused and designed to get you to $200K of ARR (annual recurring revenue). Our community of B2B SaaS Investors and Advisors have all been founders and operators. We know that giving up equity is a big decision, which is why we work hard to early every point you give up to make sure you get outsized value from joining our portfolio.
6 // What is your advice to Platform job seekers?
Go work at a start-up or build a start-up. There is no better way to get involved in the VC ecosystem than being a founder and if you want to work in VC Platform truly understanding the founder experience is a must. If you want to stand out, helping companies in the portfolio and getting introduced to the fund through founders is a super helpful way to stand out.
7 // Content Reccos?
I would absolutely recommend the book Unreasonable Hospitality. I love taking lessons from other industries and applying them to my own work. The thing I took away from that book that I think about every day is a quote, "the way you do the small things, is the way you do the big things." I've always been someone who loves the details. I also think that a company, a relationship, anything is built in small steps, not big ones. I try to sweat the small things, because they give other people a feeling of being cared for and that really matters.
