Reading & Learning 🗞️

This past week VC Platform leaders gathered in Miami: 500+ attendees from 20+ countries, representing 1,000+ VC firms and $2.6T in AUM. Now, that’s a lot of power in one room!

Huge shoutout to the VC Platform Global Community, the Board, and Executive Director, Josh Goodfield, for putting together such an incredible summit. Planning events for Ops & Event people must be additionally stressful, but they knocked it out of the park!

Read some initial reflections below (I’m sure with many more to come!).

When I started in a VC network role back in 2015, there weren't a lot of firms doing it and there weren't a lot of people in similar roles to bounce ideas of off/learn from. The silver lining? Necessity drove me to learn through hands-on experience. The flip side? Plenty of trial and error…Here are a few rapid fire pieces of advice, after almost a decade of doing this:

1) Know the why behind building your network & use that as your north star.
2) Iterate. What works one year, may not work the next. Change it based on your advisors & their needs/wants.
3) Look beyond C-suite executives; often those directly involved in the day-to-day operations offer richer insights to early stage companies
4) Authentic relationships can never be automated; invest time in genuine, face-to-face connections
5) Embrace individuality; what works for one firm, may not work for you. Find your unique approach.

I attended the VC Platform Global Community Summit this week. The growth of community and rapid pace VCs are building their platforms to support founders is impressive. Some insights:

👉 The makeup of platform teams is changing: The old model was finance and talent, and occasionally marketing. New teams include talent and marketing but also platform (content), community development (network), and BizDev (sales). It feels like community development is the fastest growing role.
👉 Everyone is building advisor programs. When I built the Costanoa Advisor Network a few years ago learned from a small group who had done it well. Now everyone is trying to build out expert networks. If you're an industry expert and want to get involved in VC, this is your time!
👉 The VP Operator demographic definitely tilts young. That's great for energy and ideas, less so for founders looking to leverage operators with experience and wisdom from being in the trenches. (Disclaimer: since I'm notJi part of this demographic I could be biased 😂)
👉 Hot topics include leveraging AI (good news, it won't replace VC Platforms), memorable founder offsites, and leveraging events. Go-To-Market (i.e. unlocking sales) is still a top priority, and yet there still aren't enough operators with sales backgrounds. My talk on helping founders learn sales was pretty popular 👍.
