Platform Spotlight 🔎✨

FAST FACTS

# Years in Platform: 2
Size of Platform Team (including you): 1
# Years in VC prior to current Platform role: 0

1 // How do you define Platform?

Supporting portfolio companies and the larger startup community with resources and connections.

2 // What was your Path to Platform?

My background is running operations for early-stage startups in Seattle.

3 // Favorite part of the Platform role?

My role is all about helping make connections. It is so rewarding to work in the zone where my superpower is so valuable.

4 // What part of the Platform role surprised you?

I thought VC was a bunch of old rich white dudes. Not wrong, but it's SO much more. Because VC thrives on the "who do you know" model, I have significant opportunities to help expand that network and hold the door open for more diversity in this ecosystem.

5 // Break down your Platform role by function.

  • 40% Operations

  • 20% Community

  • 20% Portfolio Support

  • 15% Marketing

  • 5% Investor Relations

6 // Pitch a founder on the value of your firm’s Platform in 280 characters or less.

Ascend is the most active pre-seed investor in the Pacific Northwest. As former operators, our founder-first approach resonates clearly with our portfolio companies. We consistently earn a 10 NPS from our founders, they say we're the most valuable investor on their cap table.

7 // What is your advice to Platform job seekers?

I feel like a lot of folks can translate their current skills into a Platform role. Top skills: genuine curiosity, quick to build trust, scrappiness, and a real passion for founding teams. You don't need to always know the answers, you just need to find the experts that can help. Groups like the VC Platform Community and Let's Talk Ops are hugely valuable to feeling successful in this role.

8 // Talk about your role as Chief of Staff (CoS). How does the CoS role differ, or is the same as, Platform?

Because I get to work for a solo GP and it’s just the two of us, my role is super dynamic. My background is running operations for startups, so building support on the Platform side comes second nature.

Beyond Platform, the CoS role really engages my ability to perceive, adapt, and advocate. I have teamed up with a GP that I truly respect, it brings me so much joy to amplify his approach and the larger Ascend brand. Part of the magic is that we highly admire the skills of the other person and have zero desire to do their job. I am able to 10x his impact by anticipating concerns, identifying issues, and executing on his priorities.

Community building is another major focus in my CoS role, I help organize a number of groups and attend 2-3+ events a week. I love being around founders and bringing people together.
