Platform Spotlight 🔎✨

FAST FACTS

# Years in Platform: 4
Size of Platform Team (including you): 1
# Years in VC prior to current Platform role: 0

1 // How do you define Platform?

I define Platform broadly as the things at an investment firm that are not investment, though I think it also can be used to refer to portfolio support.

2 // What was your Path to Platform?

I first entered the world of entrepreneurship after business school as employee #1 at a VC-backed IoT company. Did a bit of everything but eventually focused on marketing. After that, I had a few of my own small companies but got very into mentoring and working with early-stage startups, which is how I became Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Techstars Farm to Fork (food tech accelerator). That's where I first started working with one of my GPs. Fun fact - prior to business school I was a film sales agent where I sold the rights to movies to help finance them!

3 // Favorite part of the Platform role?

Working with founders! Our portfolio is filled with truly intelligent, awesome leaders and it feels amazing when I can help them get a win. I also love to build and create so thinking through resources and tools that serve multiple founders at once is right up my alley. And I'd be remiss not to mention the overall Platform community - lots of people who I learn from and just generally enjoy!

4 // What part of the Platform role surprised you?

I think the supportive nature of the Platform community has been an incredibly great surprise. I did a poor job of surrounding myself with peers when I was an operator so to dive into a world of people who have been helpful and willing to share since the first moment I started has been wonderful.

5 // Break down your Platform role by function.

  • 60% Portfolio Support

  • 25% Community

  • 15% Marketing

6 // Pitch a founder on the value of your firm’s Platform in 280 characters or less.

Our team delivers big with over 1,800 yearly touchpoints, offering specialized support in fundraising, BD/sales, and PR/marketing. We are all about unlocking access to networks. Particularly for us, it's unlocking access to the knowledge and connections here in Minnesota in our core areas of investment - digital health, foodtech, and enterprise SaaS.

7 // What is your advice to Platform job seekers?

Do your diligence on the GPs you're going to work with - make sure your vision, goals, values, and approach to founders align with theirs - it will make your life so much better!
